HarpShot – A Webmaster Who Blows

Quid Hoc Finiti Globulus

Initially, in order to get this HarpShot blog off the ground, I just used a handy dandy lorem ipsum generator to get me a couple paragraphs of cool Latin stuff (does anybody know if those generators generate meaningful sentences or just a bunch of random latin words?).

Now, though, it seems like it would be a good idea to actually say something, so as to not be accused of uselessly taking up server space. Right?

One of the people whose website I manage expressed via email a critical attitude about upgrades. I had just informed him that I’d upgraded to WP 1.2.1 on the heels of WP 1.2.0. He bemoaned the time I had to spend just for upgrading, and expressed the sentiment that it would be courteous if developers would limit their upgrades to no more than once a quarter (3 months). I told him the problem is the hackers aren’t courteous enough limit their attacks to one a quarter.

I was wondering the other day whether the web has really changed that much since the first web site I launched circa 1994. Some people would say it’s much faster now, but I would disagree. Web pages used to load in about 5 to 15 seconds back then, and it’s about the same now. It reminded about computer programs. Back then, my word processor, WordStar, ran a lot faster than any word processor does now, unless you count strictly text editors like NotePad (to mention one that everybody knows the name of, though I rarely use it, preferring others like TextPad, Crimson Editor, SciTe, NotePad++, to name a few).

I think I’ll leave some Latin, anyhow.
